My hair goes from greasy to dry?

I have shoulder length hair, my daily hair care includes washing at night with shampoo (no conditioner) and brushing it. I don't use hair product or a straighter or anything.

Here's my problem...

My hair is either really greasy and lifeless or it's really dry and frizzy. If I use moisture shampoo it gets way to greasy and if I use shampoo designed to get rid of grease it gets dry again.

What is an easy and inexpensive fix to this problem? If my hair wouldn't be too dry or greasy I would start styling it more but it seems to make the problem worse.

Your dilema is a more common one than you might think... There is a specialized product line called Rene Furterer that comes from Paris and one of the shampoos is specifically designed to address precisely this problem. It is called Curbicia. One of the pharmaceutical grade ingredients in it targets the oil production in the scalp by absorbing excess oil without stripping the hair dry. With regular use, it can even begin to regulate/normalize oil production. A lot of celeb stylists use it on their clients who have similar issues. It's the only shampoo I have seen be very effective. An online source for this that has the best pricing I have seen (especially if you buy the liter size that would last you @ six months or so) is www.renefurtereronline.com. If you are serious about making your hair be it's best, try the Rene Furterer Curbicia.

use garnier fructis shampoo and conditioner, it works!

This is a quick fix, start using conditioner and make it a regualar part of your hair routine. Shampoo is simply a starter, a cleanser, conditioner is the most important process, because it will balance your hair so that it's not too greasy or too dry. Nexxus is a great product line, but it is kind of pricey. A good alternative is the Generic version of thier line, but if its hard to fine, I like Infusium 23, their leave-in conditioner is tops. But don't use the leave-in as an alternative to actually conditioning your hair!

Try Kadus Sensitive Shampoo for frequent use.

Using a different shampoo for example using a moisture shampoo on Monday and then on Tuesday use one for greasy hair is very healthy for your hair and for your scalp. Be sure to lather your hair up real well, and then rinse in out thoroughly.

First of all you say you wash it every night w/ shampoo and no conditioner and brush it. By washing your hair everyday, you are causing it to be dry. Also...

Greasy Hair

A certain amount of oil or grease is healthy, and in fact necessary for your hair to remain in optimum condition, but too much oil can cause our hair to look dirty and lank.

You can split greasy hair into two types; greasy hair and scalp or greasy scalp and dry hair. If suffering from the latter, our general advice would be to use a shampoo for the scalp and a conditioner for the hair itself, i.e. a shampoo for greasy hair and a dry hair conditioner.

If you have read this and are thinking "I don't have that, it's only my hair that's greasy", then you don't have a grease problem but a product issue! What I mean is that you're using a product that is either:

Not right for your type of hair e.g. too heavy a product for fine hair

Too much of a product/too much in one spot

A poor quality product

For those still interested in the grease issue, oil originates from glands in the scalp so this is the area we need to focus on. There are several products for oily scalps to help control the over production of oil, but it is important to know how not to make the condition worse yourself.

If your hair is greasy we tend to wash it more frequently, and scrub it just that bit harder to get it clean and this is exactly what we should be avoiding. The glands which produce the oil are stimulated by massage, therefore we should practice a few of the following habits when dealing with a greasy scalp.

Shampoo with the flat of your fingers rather than the tips for a more gentle cleaning action.

When combing or brushing your hair, don't over do it or use too vigorous an action.

Try shampooing your hair a little less often! Twice a day is too much. I know that this may seem to be the worst thing for someone with a greasy scalp but give it a go. Firstly you need to break the cycle of frequent shampooing, try shampooing every second day. If you find your scalp is still greasy, wash it daily using the gentle technique we suggest above.

Evening Primrose oil or zinc supplements can be beneficial in helping correct sebum (oil) activity.

If the problem persists it could be hormonal or some other internal factor and a trichologist or doctor will need to be consulted.

Ive been using Infusium 23 moisturizing Hidratante Shampoo and Conditioner, this stuff smells good, and feels great, but just try the conditioner, the shampoo isn't that great. I would also try Neutrogena Triple Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner, which is at Target (hard to find, but super great). Good Luck, hope this helps!

using something from your local store is why your hair is greasy, they carry wax-y products.

i have problems w/oily hair as well. I wash my hair every morning and condition my hair from the mid shaft down. not my scalp, which is what gets oily. and if you blow dry your hair, i bet you will have some life to your hair. spray hairspray at your scalp, not a lot and then blow dry your hair upside down, you will see a diff.

Use a shampoo for oily hair, maybe even a clarifying shampoo. Use conditioner too but don't put it on your scalp. Apply it only to the ends of your hair. Comb it through on the ends only. I think Pantene is good and there are even new Suave shampoos that work pretty well. Use a regular conditioner, the ones that add moisture supposedly weigh hair down.
